This morning I received a pleasant surprise email from the folks at Junta42 with congratulations to Brian Solis, Brian Clark, David Meerman Scott, Jay Baer and TopRank’s Online Marketing Blog on making the top of the first Junta42 Top Content Marketing Blogs list in 2011. It is more than a little humbling to be included amongst such talented and respected industry veterans.

Joe Pulizzi runs Junta42 and is the first person (that I know of) to really popularize the notion of “content marketing”. In that regard Joe and his team really walk the talk: He also runs the Content Marketing Institute, Chief Content Officer magazine and the upcoming Content Marketing World conference. The blogs and writers that make the Junta42 list also “walk the talk” with content marketing and serve as a great example for those that want to better understand how content fits within the marketing mix.

The Junta42 list has been published since 2007 and the top 42 scores (thanks to Janet Robbins) are calculated from a pool of over 400 blogs using a combination of:

1) Relevance to Content Marketing
2) How much the blog adds to the Content Marketing conversation
3) Google Page Rank
4) blog consistency
5) previous ranking

Thanks to a great blogging team, TopRank’s Online Marketing Blog has made the number one spot on this list 3 times.  This is the 10th edition of the Junta42 list and 2011 marks the 10 year anniversary for my agency, TopRank Online Marketing.

If you look at our tag cloud (the tab in the right column), it’s easy to see why we are included in this list, since we’ve been focused on content creation, optimization and promotion for quite a while. In fact, before Joe started promoting the idea of “content marketing” I used to say we focused on “editorial marketing” when explaining TopRank since our Online Marketing consulting practice emphasizes earned and owned media vs. advertising.

POLL: How do you feed your blog posts to Facebook?

An important source of traffic to your blog is Facebook. I’ve observed a trend in social media. About a year ago, most of my social traffic was from Twitter. Now, it’s overwhelmingly coming from Facebook.

So, it’s a darn good idea to make sure your blog posts are showing up on your Facebook Page (and profile if you use your profile for business purposes or if you have a personal blog). I’m in the “automate” school and have been experimenting with the various applications that pull the RSS feed from my blog onto my page.

I’m curious to know which application you use and why. The poll below does not cover all the options so if you don’t see your preferred method listed, please enter it in the “Other” field and tell us about it in the comments.

I’m currently using RSS Graffiti.  I like the interface and the fact I can choose which profile or page I want the post to be associated with. Also like that I can determine how often the feed is polled for new content and add text to introduce the feed. And, it’s not limited to blogs. You can set up any RSS feed and deliver the content to your page – I set up my Cinchcasts to feed to my page as well (this isn’t a unique feature to RSS Graffiti).

While all the applications do an adequate job, I’ve noticed that feeds that are auto posted don’t get as much visibility in the main Facebook News Feed which is where most people engage and interact with your content. The people who are adamant about posting blog links manually have an advantage there.

I use networked blogs to add my posts to my Blind Pig & The Acorn fb page. And I use typepad’s fb feature to add my posts to my personal fb page. Since typepad integrated the like facbook feature-my hits have really increased. I also use a twitter app to send my BP&TA fb posts to my twitter page. I love all the automated feed pushers : )

Ironically, RSS Graffiti wasn’t able to pull this post on to my FB page and I had to post it manually. What I do like is that I was able to see a report about WHY the feed failed (some problem with Facebook not being able to configure something in the post – probably the java script in the poll).

I used Networked Blogs as recommended by Mari Smith. It means that I don’t think about it. My blog feeds automatically into my LinkedIn Profile, but I manually use the Tweet Meme button on my blog so I can add some engagement to my Tweet. I started using Notes, but it was too inconsistent. Keep up all this great advice Denise, there is so much still to learn!

So far, NetworkedBlogs is by far the favorite. I was using it as well until it failed on me. I was on vacation for 3 weeks and had queued up posts on two blogs to publish while I was away. Most never were published and I had to post the link manually. That started my recent quest for a better solution. So far, not one app has performed perfectly. And, some don’t include the “Share” link or only post the title with no excerpt.

I am VERY interested in this discussion. After course with you and Rachna, I added Networked Blogs and Notes App. Also have had intermittent problems. Main issue is that people comment on Facebook, but don’t actually come to my blog. Laura Roeder says she uses PING. I will look into RSS Graffiti.

I use Networked Blogs to feed the page, but only because it was pretty easy to implement. I think a post comparing the benefits and detriments of the several possibilities would be VERY useful. And then a how-to?

38.8% Of the votes, the votes (“other”) more than double its nearest rival, it is clear that the NetworkedBlogs is a popular choice for posting your articles to blog to your Facebook page.

As I shared in the survey, post comments I NetworkedBlogs for awhile, but after that it did not display messages queued for three weeks while I was on vacation, which soured me on the application. Social RSS works well during the free trial, but when I did not upgrade to the paid version, it becomes sporadic on the validation of the feed.

What I love rss Graffiti, is that I can choose to display like me my profile of Denise Wakeman, or as my Blog page Squad – with most applications, anything post you on your Page is present as being sent by the Page, not you, the person. Can I customize how food shows (alone or with an abstract title), add an introduction to food and obtain reports if a stream does not display. Images to use in the post are also displayed.

If you are participating in the Summit of the Blogging success (start on Tuesday, 1 February), Mari Smith is a whole session on Turbo-Boost your Blog traffic with Facebook and promises to reveal the proven tactics, strategies and tools to help optimize traffic entering your blog in taking full advantage of everything that offers Facebook. I heard its promise to reveal some of his secret Ninja tricks to get the Facebook blog traffic.

Although I was not evidence and cannot find any info through a cursory search, I am satisfied that links to the blog posts that are posted manually show more frequently in the News Feed, top positions that are added through RSS feeds. Anyone have info about it? Or am I imagining things? My experience is that when I manually post a link, I get interactions much more (likes, comments) that posts are automatically displayed via RSS.

In any event, regardless of what application you choose, make sure that you feed your blog to your Facebook page. If you’re not, you’re leaving lots of traffic on the table”.” “” And traffic is an essential element to obtain more visibility leads, prospects, opt-ins, concerts, clients, opportunities…

Brag About Your Blog Day Nets Big Visibility Opportunity

About once a month I host Brag About Your Blog day on my Facebook wall. A few weeks ago over 200 people bragged about their blogs! Not only did the bloggers get a lot of visibility on my Wall, they also benefited from additional posts on Facebook as well as a lot of tweeting about the opportunity.

But the biggest visibility opp showed up last week. I started seeing posts on Facebook thanking me for my good blogging karma and I had no idea what was being referred to. When I checked out a post, I followed a link to an article on WE Magazine called 101 Women Bloggers to Watch in 2011. Editor Heidi Richards had culled the list of blogs posted on my wall and featured dozens of the women who had taken the opportunity to brag about their blog. It was so cool! Quite a few of my blogging clients and friends were on the list.

Once again, these savvy bloggers are reaping the rewards with more visibility – shout outs of thanks and congratulations on Facebook and Twitter, comments on the original blog post, and related blog posts like this one which in the end drive more traffic and engagement on their sites.

I’m giving up on automation…

…at least as far as syndicating my blog posts to my Facebook page.

Here’s the deal.

I’ve long suspected that blog posts that are syndicated using a third party app to pull the feed to Facebook pages and profiles don’t get nearly as much visibility and engagement as posts that are manually added. I can tell because when I manually post a link, I will always get “likes” and comments. However, automated posts often get NO engagement whatsoever. If the point is to share information, build a community of readers and inspire conversation and interaction, then my efforts are wasted if no one is seeing my content.

Manually posted links carry more weight with Facebook. And, most people interact with your posts via their News Feed so if you’re post doesn’t show up, no one sees it, because they don’t go to your Page. This has to do with something Facebook calls EdgeRank which you can read about here in a post by Mari Smith.

Getting your Facebook fan page posts seen in the News Feeds is one of the most important – and elusive – aspects of marketing on Facebook. Jeff Widman of BrandGlue.com discovered that some 88% of Facebook users never return to a fan page once they’ve clicked the Like button. Instead, they see and engage with your content in their News Feed.

In my recent poll, I revealed that a majority of bloggers prefer NetworkedBlogs for syndicating their blog content to their Facebook Page. But I’ve tried them all with equally dismal engagement results: NetworkedBlogs, Social RSS, RSS Graffiti, Notes Application, Dlvr.it, and Feedblitz.

That’s why I give up on Facebook automation for my blogs. I want people to like, comment and click through to the full blog post. That means the links need to be manually posted in order to get the best chance for engagement. 

I’m going to follow Mari’s lead and keep the Blog tab on my page which is kept up to date by Social RSS. And, from here on out I will manually post links to new blog posts with a brief introduction to the content.


What’s your take on this issue? I know from polling that most bloggers use automation to get their blog posts onto their Facebook page, but are you getting the engagement you want?

Completely agree, Denise!

I’ve tried several apps as well and have had issues with posts not getting posted and lack of comments and interaction.

Whenever I manually post anything — blog posts, videos, etc. — I always get better engagement.

Bummer not to be able to automate the process, but doesn’t make sense if you don’t get the results you’re ultimately after.

Automation is good for some things, but for right now it seems that the best results for engagement will come from manually posting.

So is it still OK to schedule posting to Facebook using Hootsuite or some other program?

I don’t find that doing it manually makes any difference. Sometimes my posts are read, sometimes not, whether they are networked or posted manually.

Also, if I “like” them, myself, they will show up in the news feed, even if they were automated. Still doesn’t mean they will get more attention.

Of course, YMMV!

I agree. I use Networked Blogs and I’m not getting any interaction either. My blog tab was automatically added when I linked with Networked Blogs. How do I go about keeping the Blog tab and manually updating it? Do you already have a blog post on this that I can read?

Good point Denise. It’s the same with Twitter. If you manually tweet your new blog posts with an enticing hand-crafted intro you get a lot more clickthroughs than if you just auto-tweet it with the standard “I just posted a new blog entry” or by exerpting the first few words of the post.

@AshleysAvon – when you go to the settings of your Networkedblogs account there should be an option for showing posts on your wall or not. Deselect that option. I don’t have NetworkedBlogs installed on my FB page anymore so I can’t tell you exactly where to find it.

Great points Denise. Everything is becoming so easy nowadays due to automation. Example, most people on my Twitter network have the auto-follow function activated, as do I. When someone follows me, I automatically follow back and even send an automatic ‘Thanks for following’ message to the new follower. This completely undermines the point of social networking–to be social. I have missed the opportunity to personally thank and interact with many new followers as a result. Great post…it reminds me to at least be human every now and then and interact with people, as opposed to strictly relying on automation to do all the work and develop relations with my networks. I can’t imagine how many interesting people and stories I’ve overlooked, or simply missed.

I was just independently reviewing this today! My findings are similar. Considering why, I agree that syndicated posts don’t carry the more personal touch — and hence usually don’t receive a glance for those looking to make a meaningful connection. I’ve often believed that a series of posted tweets, hashtagged notes, etc. made a profile look like ‘no one was home’ …then I say “what’s the point?!”

I have had some response to my NetworkedBlog posts, however. @AshleysAvon search for the NetworkedBlogs FB Page, and click on ‘go to app’ — hope this helps.

This was really helpful to learn Denise. My networked blog was just feeding to the blog tab of my business page and I was going to try to figure out how to fix that. Because it might as well be on Mars as buried there. But now I’ll just manually post and save myself the time of figuring out an automated solution.

Why do you blog?

I’m constantly exhorting business owners and service professionals to use a business blog as a marketing tool. Some eagerly jump on board, others are reluctant or downright hostile to the idea.

Of course, if you do make the leap into the blogosphere, you’ve got to have a plan and more importantly you’ve got to know why you’re blogging. In addition to connecting with amazing people, building a community and sharing my expertise, these are a few of the reasons I blog…
I suspect there are as many reasons to blog as there are bloggers.

I started blogging as an experiment. I’ve been doing it on behalf of clients for years now but had never tried controlling my own area of the web. My wife decided to join me in a new little blog and its been amazing. I’ve learned more about blogging (and social media) in two months than I have in years. Its a great refresh for me professionally, and extremely rewarding personally.

I agree with the reasons you listed Denise, and with Vanessa above. Of all the choices of ways to get one’s message out, I’d say blogging is in my top 2 or 3 as far as enjoying it, not just doing it because it’s a good thing to do. In addition, it’s practicing what I preach .

The traffic doesn’t lie! Since we started our corporate blog, you can see a giant uptick in unique visitors to our site. Even if every visitor doesn’t turn into a customer, it’s more people who have come in contact with your company. We follow a strategy of tweeting out our new blog posts as well, and that only amplifies the effect. Thanks for a great reminder, too, that you need to continue asking yourself why you’re blogging…even if you THINK you know…

I think the most important part of blogging (besides the comments above) is doing it because you enjoy it. If it supports your business, great! But if the authenticity and joy does not come through in the content, people will pick up on that and the true value of the blogging is lost.

In short, what successes have you to your blog/social media?  
I started to build a following on Twitter talking about e-commerce, social media and the emergence of the two in social commerce. When we launched Addoway everyone wanted to see what I’ve been a part of, and now we have ambassadors I met by Twitter help spread us the word daily. Today, I have been on 11 ecommerce radio broadcasts and interviewed by YoungEntrepreneur and Retire@21.

What was the obstacle face you in your business?  
Chicken and eggs. You need sellers or buyers first? What comes first? Well you need buyers, but you need good vendors with products to attract buyers.

What you find in with a blog/social?
People like to share their feelings and to talk about what they want. I meet incredible people every day trying to earn a living online and it’s just great to connect with them.

What specific feature that you like most blogs/social media?  
Against the personal connection with my readers.

What other benefits met you blogs/social media?
The ability to really connect and see what people on the market. We have an investigation of uservoice until now where we let us our users decide our next innovation.

Is there something you wish to add? 
With the emergence of platforms from Twitter, Facebook and blog anywhere that can really grow their business with some good old fashioned hard work.
